Beauty has gotten to a point where it’s only benefiting us on the outside. But what good is makeup if it’s damaging your skin underneath and how did we get to the point where harmful chemicals being apart of our daily routine is a norm. Let’s take a look at some common makeup ingredients that are also harmful.

What is Makeup Foundation?

Foundation is a skin colored makeup that is applied to the face to cover flaws, enhances the complexion, and sometimes used to alter the natural skin-tone. It is exactly what it sounds like. Whether you are wearing your foundation today or you are on the search for a new one, you will be able identify the ingredients just by reading the label.

Phthalates, this word may not be listed on labels because companies don’t have to disclose this as long as it’s being listed under “fragrance”. It links to cancer, endocrine disruption reproductive toxicity and abnormalities, decreased production of testosterone and fertility in males, premature delivery and endometriosis in women.

Lead is a neurotoxin that can cause neurodevelopmental problems in children. Although it’s been taken out of paint it hasn’t been taken out of foundation. Lead has also been linked to miscarriages and infertility. The FDA tested popular brands and found that 400 contained up to 7.19ppm of lead as a color additive.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) links to allergies, disrupts immune system and links to cancer.

Heavy Metals

mercury links to nervous system toxicity, as well as reproductive, immune and respiratory toxicity.

aluminum links to neurotoxicity, developmental reproductive toxicity and cancer.

Other metals that shouldn’t be in your foundation or on your face are arsenic, chromium and iron.

Butylated Compounds (BHT, BHA) This chemical is used in products so we can keep them on our shelves longer. In other words it’s a preservative. But it’s linked endocrine disruptors, skin allergies, and reproductive, organ, and developmental toxicity.

Parabens are used as a preservative. But it interferes with hormone production, reproduction, the nervous system, and the immune system. It’s also been found in breast cancer tissue.

Phenoxyethanol is used as a replacement for parabens. But don’t be fooled, this chemical sucks just as bad. It has the same effects as parabens and it’s been banned in Japan. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a consumer alert warning that it can “depress the central nervous system and may cause diarrhea and vomiting” in infants.

Octinoxate is linked with endocrine disruption and thyroid disorders.

Ethoxylated Compounds also known as PEG Compounds or Polyethylene glycol is contaminated with Ethylene oxide. It is also a human carcinogen that can be harmful to the nervous system and human development. 4-dioxane is a breast carcinogen that can stay in environments for long periods without degrading.The Truth: About Toxic Ingredients in Foundation

Take a look at your foundation’s ingredients. If it has any of these ingredients in it throw it out. There’s nothing like a fresh start.
